What makes a song sing summer has little to do with its release date, much to do with an ability to articulate a fantasy of summer to its listener, a compressed expression of the season’s particular emotions, tastes, sensations. The daylight that strains toward dawn, the too-brief, humid nights that follow. Summer songs carry us across the peaks and valleys that lie between Memorial Day and Labor Day, promising eternal life while reminding us of the season’s continual end.
